UNICEF Cambodia – Healthy Environment Healthy Children Programme
Stephen Rae was commissioned by UNICEF Cambodia to provide photography and video production for the Healthy Environment Healthy Children programme. The assignment focused on documenting environmental risks affecting children, including air pollution, exposure to heavy metals, heat stress and water contamination. Working with communities and stakeholders, the project aimed to support awareness, policy development and improved health outcomes for children across Cambodia.
Project Overview
Filming and photography took place in Mondulkiri province, where small-scale gold mining activities are present in local rivers and creeks. The assignment documented the balance between livelihoods and environmental impact, highlighting potential risks to communities and particularly to children. Following fieldwork, UNICEF Cambodia convened a multi-stakeholder forum in Phnom Penh, bringing together government representatives, NGOs, environmental experts and community members to review findings and explore solutions.

Supporting Video Content | Two films Air and Water
In addition to photography, video content was produced to support programme documentation and communication. The film complements the photography by capturing interviews, environmental context and real-life conditions, providing a broader visual narrative of the assignment. Producing two films on Air and Water pollution and the impacts and solutions for local communiites, health centres and education.
